The Alert Program

The ALERT Program for self-regulation
Self-regulation refers to our ability to adapt our level of alertness appropriately for a task or situation. Being well regulated means attaining the just right level of calmness to pay attention and focus in class, to be able to settle down for sleep or to be able to achieve a state of organized excitement for a team sport.

The Alert Program TM (Williams and Shellenberger) is a fun approach that focuses on the following:

  • Giving children insight into what self-regulation means.
  • Giving children strategies to help them improve their ability to pay attention and focus (such as in the classroom).
  • Giving children strategies to help them stay appropriately calm and organized (such as at bed time).
  • Educating parents on the concepts of self-regulation and how they can support their child.

This group incorporates sensory techniques with a cognitive approach. It is run by experienced occupational therapists. Participating children need to be at least 7 years old. There will be a 30 minute parent talk prior to the first session in order to introduce the concepts of self-regulation. There will be handouts, home activities and parent feedback after the last session of the program.

Length of program: 6 weeks
Duration: 1 hour
Cost: S$470 per child.
