Assessment at Kaleidoscope
Assessment provides the information necessary to plan intervention and measure progress.
The assessments that we carry out at Kaleidoscope are based on the child’s functional abilities and provide important information regarding how the child is performing in areas such as:
- Motor development
- Speech and language development including social communication skills
- Sensory processing
- Social development and play skills
- Daily living skills
- Attention and focusing skills
A comprehensive assessment may include:
- Standardized testing - the child completes one or more tests that provide information relating to specific areas such as language or motor development. This will provide information regarding how the child compares to other children of the same age.
- Parent or teacher questionnaires/interviews – this is extremely important as it provides the therapist with information about how the child is performing in their natural environments.
- Clinical observations – the therapist will have the child do some specific tasks and will asses their performance based on age related norms.
- Informal observations – the therapist will observe the child in a session taking note of their ability in areas such as movement, communication, play, problem solving, attention, listening etc.
- A school or home observation – to help identify the main issues that affect the child’s performance within his/her natural environments.
