Acceptance and commitment therapy

ACT Therapy

ACT is ‘acceptance and commitment therapy’. ACT differs from traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in that rather than trying to teach people to better control their thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories and other private events, ACT teaches them to "just notice", accept, and embrace by:

  • A – Accepting your own reactions and being present in the moment by being a detached observer of thoughts and feelings
  • C – Choosing specific valued direction which leads towards vitality and change and away from mental suffering, rigidity, avoidance and confrontation.
  • T – Take action, even despite difficult thoughts and feelings by learning not to fuse with them but to use strategies which allow them to be present, whilst, at the same time, focusing on small behavior changes.
