Counseling

Our counselor Kwok Ying works with children with various issues ranging from those who have special needs, to those with behavioural issues at home and or at school. She also works with children who are experiencing emotional difficulties due to major changes happening at home or in school such as:

  • Conflicts in the family affecting their relationships with parents and/or siblings,
  • grief and loss following separation, divorce, death of close ones, and
  • social challenges at school like bullying.

She collaborates closely with parents and caregivers in supporting their efforts to provide better care and guidance for their children.

In her work with children with special needs, she is in the process of getting her DIR/Floortime certification from the DIR Institute in the USA. This work involves:

  • Tailoring the relationships of the child to the caregiver, family, teachers and therapist to the child's individual biological differences by helping them to understand these biological traits;
  • Meeting the child at his/her level of emotional development and moving them up the developmental ladder;
  • Building the critical foundations for social and emotional thinking.
  • Helping caregivers recognise patterns of interaction with their child/children and with other family members;
  • Changing strategies used for coping with anxiety, anger and disappointment;
  • Broadening the range of emotions that caregivers can cope with so that they can better support their child in his/her development;
  • Dealing with frequently occurring stresses that could occur in a couple relationship that affect their parenting.

Child-centered and child-led play therapies, using toys, symbols, games, play dough, art, music and drama are used to work with children and their caregivers, parents and/or siblings.

She also helps children, adolescents and adults (couples and individuals) in emotional release work by creating a safe space and using creative exercises to allow them to become aware of hidden or pent-up feelings so that they can let go of them in a safe and supported manner. She facilitates the process of transforming these difficult emotions that clients face in their lives to facilitative emotions that bolster their strengths and confidence to choose new directions in their relationships. Destructive patterns of interactions between couples and/or within a family system could then be transformed into healing ones.
