QuickStart:

Intensive Group Therapy

Main Goals of the Therapeutic Play Group
  • To bring the child “up the developmental ladder” to the next stage of relationship development
  • To develop social interaction skills through a highly individualized program including Special Education, OT, Speech & Language and Sound Therapy input
  • To promote school readiness through a play-based, creativity-fostering program
Characteristics of the Therapeutic Play Group
  • The program embraces the DIR/ Floortime philosophy founded by Dr Stanley Greenspan. The Floortime approach builds on the importance of working within the child’s current developmental level; supports and strengthens the child’s unique sensory profile; and helps the child to relate, communicate and develop thinking skills.
  • Facilitated by a team of experienced senior staff
  • Includes Special Education, OT and Speech Therapy input
Therapists Involved:

The group is conducted by experienced senior staff of Kaleidoscope. Every session is run by a Special Education Teacher together with a senior Therapist.
  • Paulene Chua, Special Education Teacher (Program Leader)
  • Suvi Pitkola, Senior Occupational Therapist
  • Meng Yi Yui, Senior Speech & Language Therapist
Number of Children per group:
  • Level I: 4 children

Length of the Program:
  • Term time: 16 weeks, School holiday time (June/ December): 4 weeks
  • 1 hour (Level I) or 1,5 hours (Level II) one to three times a week
  • An option to continue with the next group is offered, should this be considered beneficial for the child.
Brief Profile of Children:
  • Difficulty playing and communicating efficiently with peers
  • Difficulty staying focused and attentive during group activities
  • Experiencing sensory processing difficulties
  • Experiencing social communication difficulties / language delay
  • Experiencing limited success in current play group/ preschool settings

Intake Criteria and Process:
  • All children are to be screened by Paulene, the Program Leader
  • Children need to demonstrate a sufficient level of independence and interaction skills. These will be assessed during the Intake Consultation.
  • Children with significant behavioral problems will only be admitted once these problems are under control and the child is ready to follow a group therapy program.
Parental Feedback:
  • Group sessions are videotaped regularly for evaluation purposes. Brief oral feedback is provided to parents after every session, and thorough video feedback sessions are arranged at the end of the program to review the child’s progress.
