Would your child benefit from Sound Therapy?
If your child has any or several of the following then they may benefit from sound therapy intervention
- Poor auditory filtering: Difficulty listening to a speaker in the presence of background sounds. For example, getting distracted in the classroom by the sound of fans, coughing, chairs being pushed or people moving around. Difficulty when listening in crowded places or talking on the phone. Or difficulty in responding when being called or spoken to unless the speaker is in close proximity.
- Over-sensitivity to everyday sounds. Distress that causes a person to cover their ears, avoid or react with fear to sounds such as flushing toilets, hand dryers, vacuum cleaners, fans, blenders, hair dryers, people clapping or singing and engines revving up.
- Slow auditory processing: Taking a longer time than expected to respond to others even when clearly hearing what was being said. Needing more time than others to think of a response.
- Difficulty with auditory sequencing. Difficulty in following verbal directions and needing a lot of repetition. Difficulty in answering questions, especially those of abstract nature and recalling sentences.
- Poor discrimination of sounds. Difficulty differentiating between different tones or sounds for example when learning phonics or a new language.
You may also consider an evaluation for sound therapy if there is …
- A history of frequent ear infections
- Delayed language development
- Poor attention
- Poor self-regulation (difficulty staying calm & alert throughout the day, poor sleeping and eating patterns, difficulty with toileting)
- A flat, monotone voice
- Unclear articulation – difficult to understand
- Poor balancing skills or other signs of vestibular processing problems (eg high need for movement / avoids swings at playground)
- Exhaustion at the end of the school day
- Withdrawal in social situations or avoidance of large gatherings such as birthday parties or school assembly
