The More Than Words Program
Parents will learn a number of strategies that help to improve their child’s communication and interaction skills including:
- The different ways their child communicates
- The next steps to take to foster their child’s language learning
- How to turn everyday activities into opportunities for their child to learn to communicate
- How to talk so their child can understand
- How to respond to their child in ways that enhance language learning
- How to create predictable and repetitive everyday routines that will help their child learn to communicate
- How to use pictures and print to help their child’s understanding
- How to develop their child’s play skills and use these as opportunities for language learning
- Why their child behaves in certain ways and what they can do about these behaviours
Program Duration and Format
The program is conducted over 3 months. Parents are required to attend weekly parent sessions, interspersed with individual clinic visits. The parent sessions are focused on teaching strategies, whilst the individual clinic visits check application and progress of the individual child. Before starting the program each child/ family must attend an individual pre-program consultation to assess the child's current communication skills and set goals to work on within the program.
