In general, an occupational therapist’s role is to assist a person to reach their maximum potential in activities of daily life. We refer to this as occupational performance. With regards to children this encompasses:
As well as the task or skill itself, the occupational therapist will assess the underlying skills that impede a child’s performance such as their motor ability, sensory processing, their ability to attend and focus and their ability to plan, sequence and organize a task from beginning to end.
If you are concerned about your child’s ability to perform or participate in age appropriate activities or your child’s teacher has indicated concern related to their skills level in the classroom then a consultation with an occupational therapist is recommended.
Some of the treatment approaches that our occupational therapists use include neuro-developmental therapy (NDT), sensory integration therapy, the DIR/Floortime approach and sound therapy.
