Alia Contractor

I am a Speech and Language Therapist and a hands on mother of three.

I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1999 from the UK followed by an MSc in Audiology (Hearing Sciences) and a further qualification in Clinical Audiology.

I started my career with the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK and have worked in various healthcare settings, schools (mainstream/special needs), early years development centres and client homes.

Since then I have lived and worked in several countries around the world.I am experienced at working with all ages from very young children to the elderly; however I believe my true calling is working with children and helping them overcome their communication difficulties so that they can fully access all the opportunities life offers.

I believe that each child is unique, with their individual set of abilities, challenges, personalities, preferences and rates of development.

I celebrate this uniqueness and tailor my therapy in order to accommodate individual differences and maximise their potential. I believe in making the sessions fun, creative and engaging, while delivering structured and evidence based treatment.

My approach is flexible, compassionate, positive and inclusive. I am experienced at working both individually and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. I strongly believe that a child's progress is optimized by involving carers, family members and other professionals and educators in the child’s life.

Having grown up in a bilingual environment myself, I am well aware of the intricacies of children growing up with multiple languages.

I am experienced at working with children with a wide range of speech and language delays/disorders, specific language impairment, phonological delay/disorder, stammering, voice disorders, attention deficit, selective mutism, autism spectrum disorder, hearing difficulties, learning difficulties, rare genetic syndromes and other difficulties.

I cherish the energy, unpredictability and humour children bring into our lives! Having two daughters and a son myself I am well aware of the mechanics of little people and how to help them get the best out of themselves. Childhood is an incredible journey sometimes, a bit challenging but always interesting and I feel truly blessed to be able to share this with so many children.
