Hi there! My name is Doreen Loh. I am a social worker and a family therapist.

Since 2006, I have been privileged to have worked with many families. My career as a social worker began in family service centres in the community. Subsequently, I dedicated 7 years helping families and youth at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) Child and Adolescent Department. I have worked in various settings including inpatient, outpatient, and a child/adolescent community mental health team.

One dynamic which I have repeatedly witnessed across families, is the struggle that parents and children have in connecting with each other, despite the immense love. According to the tenets of the Circle of Security Parenting (COSP), it is never too late to help your child develop a safe and secure relationship with you. At Kaleidoscope, we too advocate for “good enough” parenting.

Imagine that communication within the family is like each family member playing with different musical instruments. On its own, the violin sounds good, the flute sounds beautiful, the piano sounds magnificent, and the cello sounds awesome. But when you put them together in a concert, without practice they may not sound as good. A conductor’s role is to guide, facilitate and support the musicians to play in harmony. Thus, you may say a family therapist is like an orchestra conductor, harmonizing the tune of each family member.

After listening to many concerned parents, I realise that the ‘parent-child relationship’ is often at the heart of every dilemma. For this reason, I have decided to dedicate myself to being the ‘conductor’ in creating beautiful harmony within families and strengthen their relationship. Looking through the lens of attachment theory, we can facilitate healing to strengthen relationship within the family. With the COVID-19 situation, I have developed experience conducting family therapy and Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) online as well.
