At Kaleidoscope we focus on helping children to:

  • Understand and manage their emotions

  • Become effective communicators

  • Build new skills and expand upon existing skills

  • Engage successfully in their natural environments (home, school and play)

  • Develop a strong sense of self

  • Take pride in their acheivements

  • Have the confidence and ability to advocate for themselves

We do this by:

  • Respecting the needs of each client individually. We do not believe in a 'one size fits all' approach

  • Presuming competence, especially when the child is non-speaking or has significant challenges in controlling their body

  • Working at the child's developmental level to ensure success

  • Recognizing, celebrating and incorporating their strengths into therapy

  • Recommending accommodations to compensate for lagging skills or sensory differences in order to increase success and/or decrease anxiety

  • Identifying and addressing any underlying causes that may be causing behavioural responses that may prevent the child from reaching their full potential

  • Ensuring that the adults in a child's life have a clear understanding of the child's developmental and social-emotional level and sensory profile

  • Including parents, and where possible, the child themselves, when setting goals that are functional, realistic and meaningful to the child

  • Partnering with parents and empowering them by providing them with up-to-date information and the tools to advocate effectively for their child
