At Kaleidoscope we focus on helping children to:
-
Understand and manage their emotions
-
Become effective communicators
-
Build new skills and expand upon existing skills
-
Engage successfully in their natural environments (home, school and play)
-
Develop a strong sense of self
-
Take pride in their acheivements
-
Have the confidence and ability to advocate for themselves
We do this by:
-
Respecting the needs of each client individually. We do not believe in a 'one size fits all' approach
-
Presuming competence, especially when the child is non-speaking or has significant challenges in controlling their body
-
Working at the child's developmental level to ensure success
-
Recognizing, celebrating and incorporating their strengths into therapy
-
Recommending accommodations to compensate for lagging skills or sensory differences in order to increase success and/or decrease anxiety
-
Identifying and addressing any underlying causes that may be causing behavioural responses that may prevent the child from reaching their full potential
-
Ensuring that the adults in a child's life have a clear understanding of the child's developmental and social-emotional level and sensory profile
-
Including parents, and where possible, the child themselves, when setting goals that are functional, realistic and meaningful to the child
-
Partnering with parents and empowering them by providing them with up-to-date information and the tools to advocate effectively for their child
